It is quite good and I agree with your logic, Lightroom and Photoshop and nearly always open on my computer. I am going to do more videos and such with this software too. It is pretty good, it does a lot of what I would want, and I do have to rethink how I do somethings, but so far there has been a work around for almost everything. I do like the tones and lighting in that image very much! Interesting composition too!! Thank you Judy, a quick grab before leaving.

Leanne the photo of old ship is terrific. However I am confused. Are all your photos done with nd filters. I tried some sunsets up at Lake Colac last week. Can you tell me why? Cheers Geoff. Hi all, yes you can buy it outright. But as I understand it you will then have to pay for upgrades. I think you will find any software you buy you will have to pay for upgrades, that is if you want them.

I cannot express an opinion on Photoshop, since I cannot afford to own one. I am using and learning Affinity Photo by Serif. There is no manual to go with it, but thousands of tutorials are floating around on the Internet, I am taking an excellent tutorial on this software from Udemy.

I think that is the problem with Photoshop, not everyone can afford it, though when you had to buy it outright it was even more unaffordable, is that a word.

It is good to see some many different companies coming up with different software and I have no doubt that eventually there will be stuff that will rival Photoshop and people will stop using it. Having been with Photoshop since at least version 3, I have have been a long-time satisfied customer.

Another alternative that I recently heard about is Affinity. There seem to be a lot of alternatives, I was asked to look at this one, which is good. Thanks Robin. I went to their website and see that they have an annual or monthly subscription just like Adobe.

Looks like nice software. You might like to take a look at their software too. Corel is another alternative. Adobe is money hungry and expects amateurs and freelancers to be able to pay prices that companies can afford.

Thanks Sherry. Ahhh, I get you. I was a little confused. I thought she was referring to the software I was writing about. It is good. But still does not outclass photoshop. There are other complaints on the WWW that seem to agree with my difficulties. It is a shame that you had those problems, I have asked the company about it. Thanks for that Geoff.

Both work with native Nikon RAW files. For extraordinary tweaking of photos but no local adjustments DxO OpticsPro can do wonders. The last time the currency was on par was in Then again, they might. As for iTunes and digital content, the same argument holds I think.

There are many articles written on it with different viewpoints depending who is pissed off and about what. We have never had a discount, never, while I acknowledge that it might cost more in terms of the exchange rate, but not over double, it seems they feel they can charge us that much and what can we do about it, nothing really, we are being ripped off. Sorry I was talking about iTunes here. As I have been a Lightroom user since LR3, I have several years of images already stored on my computer.

It was significantly faster than LR usually imports images and loads previews. Manage Mode showing the network with the NAS folders viewable. Again the image preview was very quick. On clicking Import, a light grey box opened up in the bottom right-hand corner, with a progress bar and it flicked through all the images as it was importing them.

I imported 28 images and it took less than a minute. Clicking Yes takes you to the image folder for viewing all the images. Develop Mode is laid out very much like Lightroom. The editing panel by default is on the left-hand side but I moved it over to the right as that is my preference. The main edit panel is Tune, and the others are Detail sharpness, noise reduction , Geometry perspective, lens corrections, and crop and Repair Heal and Clone. You can also change the numbers or click on the arrows.

It does not appear to reset to zero if you double click on the bar as the whole bar is active. The above image has been edited with the settings visible, plus a few other panels. In general, I found it a bit more aggressive than LR would be in comparison so if you prefer a more subtle approach, be delicate with your application of the sliders.

The main blueberry in my image had a mark on the front so I decided to test out the Heal function. While it was a bit slow to apply and appeared to do it in stages, I was quite surprised at how well it worked. A much better job than my LR6 can do. I also experimented with other things in the Develop Mode. There is an option to copy and paste settings between images, you can apply a vignette, and tweak its settings.

To save the image there are several options. Done opens up a dialog box to Save or Save As like a standard file-save function in Windows. The Export option opens up this window which allows you to choose things like destination, change the name, format, and size. Similar to the standard Export functionality in Lightroom. Edit mode with an image open for editing.

Edit Mode is where you can do the kind of editing for which Photoshop is often used. I moved a few panels around to make the workspace more familiar but otherwise, the above screenshot shows the basic Edit Mode setting.

They are only available in Edit Mode under Tools. There are several different categories and a Preview Browser offers an idea of what the final outcome will be. The effect is applied directly to the base layer which is a bit limiting as you cannot edit the effect in any way and it is applied with quite a lot of enthusiasm.

For comparison, I edited my image manually by adding a couple of texture layers and masked off the heavy texture with a soft brush to have a more gentle effect. An alternative version of the image with some grunge texture layers manually added, adjusted individually, and heavy texture masked off to soften the overall outcome.

One limitation in adding texture layers manually was not being able to drag them across from an open instance of Windows Explorer, which I can do with Photoshop. It also offers a monthly or annual subscription which allows use on up to five devices, updates, and cloud storage as an alternative. Prices for the subscription vary depending on Personal or Business use. Yes, it has some quirks and annoyances in comparison to other programs but nothing that renders it difficult to use.

As a package to get a beginner started and provide everything you are likely to need, this is a competitive software solution for the general purpose user. Strong contender both on price and the fact it offers everything you are likely to need in one place, making it consistent and easy for a beginner to use and manage.
